Our Pre-School

A Day at Pickhill Pre-School

14At Pickhill Pre-School, you can choose for your child to attend any or all of the 5 sessions during the school day, as follows:

Early Birds 7.30am until 8.45am
Morning Session 8.45am until 11.45am
Lunchtime 11.45am until 12.30pm
Afternoon Session 12.30pm until 3.30pm
Night Owls 3.30pm until 6.00pm

At Pickhill Pre-school, each day is thoughtfully planned to provide a nurturing, engaging, and stimulating environment where children can grow and thrive. Our sessions are structured to promote curiosity, independence, and a love of learning through a mix of child-initiated and adult-led activities.

The school day is broken into two sessions. Both sessions follow a similar format with a mixture of free-flow learning and adult-lead sessions.

On arrival the children will hang their bags and coats onto their peg and will do self-registration using our self-registration board. They will then enter our Continuous Provision. Once all the children are settled, our morning begins with a DEAR session (Drop Everything And Read) where we share our book of the week. Our pre-school children will also have a daily 10-15 minute maths input and a short phonics input. We will end each session by sharing all the wonderful things we have been learning and singing songs and nursery rhymes.

Throughout the sessions children will have access to free -flow Learning in our Continuous provision. Children can move freely between our carefully resourced indoor and outdoor environments, choosing from a range of play-based learning experiences. This approach encourages independence, confidence, and social interaction, while supporting children’s individual interests.

Throughout the session, children are invited to take part in an adult-led focused activity designed to support development across the seven areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). These activities are planned based on the children’s interests and next steps, ensuring a personalised and meaningful learning experience. Throughout the session Adults will also join children in provision and move their learning on through supporting individual next steps.

Children will be able to access a healthy snack and drink during each session.

During our lunchtime session children will have their lunch in our canteen with the rest of Class 1. They will then have the opportunity to play outside before being collected or returning to the classroom for the afternoon session.

At the end of the day, children are able to stay and access our wrap around care if required
